Amnesty week set for late fees, fines

URBANA — Two Champaign County elected officials have announced an "amnesty week" for defendants facing late fees and fines for non-payment of costs in criminal and traffic cases.


"We are having an amnesty week the first week of October," said Circuit Clerk Katie Blakeman, whose office is teaming up with State's Attorney Julia Rietz to clear some cases. Rietz's office holds the contract with a firm that collects overdue fines and fees. "For that week, if you pay off your entire case with outstanding fines and fees, we will waive the collection and late fees," Blakeman said, adding it could mean a 30 percent savings for some.
